If towing prowess is a priority, the 2024 Ford Expedition offers up a comfy cabin, strong power, good driver-assistance tech.

What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Ford Expedition? What does it compare to?

The 2024 Expedition is the biggest Ford SUV, a three-row vehicle available in long and even longer configurations. Shop it against the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, plus the Toyota Sequoia.

Is the 2024 Ford Expedition a good SUV?

Though beginning to show its age against fresh-faced rivals, the 2024 Expedition lineup excels for its good ride quality, its strong (if thirsty) turbocharged V-6, and its broad lineup. It’s a 6.7 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

What's new for the 2024 Ford Expedition?

The Expedition sees few notable tweaks for 2024, aside from tow hooks now included on versions with top towing equipment and a new Wild Green paint hue.

Available in two lengths (the bigger one is called Expedition Max), this large SUV carries over its 2022 refresh. The standard version stretches a garage-busting 210 inches from bumper to bumper, while the Max adds another foot that may relegate it to your driveway.

Its front end wears a grille that extends chrome (or dark, on some trims) lines into busy LED headlights. It’s more traditional from the side, with a boxy appearance that could have come straight out of the 1990s. That’s no slight, though, as the Expedition is a decidedly old-school concept with plenty of modern tech in its cabin. The optional 15.0-inch touchscreen is mounted high on a stylish dash where it manages to look merely “big” and not “enormous.”

Ford offers its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 in two states of tune: 380 hp for less-costly Expeditions and a hearty 440 hp as you work your way up the lineup. Power vaults to the rear or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox that can stumble through low-speed gear changes and highway-passing downshifts. Good ride quality comes courtesy of the fully independent suspension. While too big for real off-road use, the Expedition can be had in a stylish and slightly more capable Timberline version, too.

The Expedition Max can lug up to 9,300 pounds of trailer when properly equipped. It won’t out-haul a big pickup, but it bests any crossover or minivan.

Inside, the Expedition features plush seats with good room in the front and middle rows. The rearmost bench is best for kids or teens, though the longer Max version offers up stretch-out space paired with a low-to-the-ground bench. Cargo space can top 120 cubic feet in the longest version with rows two and three toppled. The high liftover height is typical for a large SUV, but a power-folding third row is widely available to make large-item loading easier.

The Expedition has done well in what crash testing has been performed. All models are well-equipped with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control, while Ford’s BlueCruise limited hands-off driver assistance is available.

How much does the 2024 Ford Expedition cost?

The Expedition runs $57,420 to start this year for an XL STX with cloth seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, running boards, and a 12.0-inch touchscreen.

Budget closer to $65,000 for a mid-level model with four-wheel drive and upgraded interior trim, or closer to $70,000 by the time you find a typical long-wheelbase Max version.

Where is the 2024 Ford Expedition made?

In Louisville, Kentucky.

2024 Ford Expedition Styling

The 2024 Ford Expedition wears decidedly retro styling.

Is the Ford Expedition a good-looking SUV?

It’s straight out of the early 2000s, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The 2024 Expedition wears conventional two-box styling with a broad band of front-end trim and a cleanly styled tailgate. We rate it at 7 out of 10 with points above average for a decent exterior and a classy cabin.

The Expedition looks a bit like it’s wearing sunglasses. Wide bars stretch from the center of its grille–where there’s a huge Ford blue oval—through its headlights and toward its big wheel arches. Each trim has a slightly different look, though we dig the rugged Timberline more than others. Its orange bits are straight out of the REI catalog, and they work well. Wheels range from 18 inches all the way up to 22s.

Inside, look for big screens. The standard 12.0-inch touchscreen is bigger than even the optional unit in the Chevy Tahoe. Top-end versions have a gigantic 15.5-inch touchscreen that’s perhaps a bit too big. The smaller screen also comes paired with conventional climate control buttons, which we far prefer.

2024 Ford Expedition Performance

The 2024 Ford Expedition offers confident towing and a commendable ride quality.

Ford’s biggest SUVs ride quite well for big, burly vehicles. The twin-turbo V-6 underhood makes for a solid hauler, too. We rate the 2024 Expedition at a 7 out of 10 for towing and acceleration.

Is the Ford Expedition 4WD?

It’s optional, though the Timberline comes only with four-wheel drive. None of these big, wide, SUVs are terrific off-roaders, though they can be optionally fitted with a limited-slip rear differential to improve grip.

How fast is the Ford Expedition?

It’s pretty peppy. Most versions have a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, which sends power to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Platinum versions use a 400-hp version of that engine, while the Timberline and models with the Stealth package up the ante to an impressive 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Those most powerful models can rip to 60 mph in about five seconds, which is downright rapid.

The 10-speed automatic—shared with arch-rival Chevy Tahoe, of all vehicles—fires off great shifts at speed. It can fumble through too many gears around town, though. We’ve made that same complaint about the Tahoe.

These big SUVs can lug 9,200 pounds, which bests the Tahoe and Yukon on paper. In reality, they’re similarly confident to those eight-cylinder models.

No Expedition is anywhere near sporty. Instead, they excel in providing a soft, comfortable ride. Models with taller wheels sub in adaptive dampers, which balance things out. The Stealth version rides on a lowered, stiffened suspension, but it’s far from zippy.

2024 Ford Expedition Comfort & Quality

The 2024 Ford Expedition has a huge, well-equipped cabin.

Ford has a lot of interior real estate to work with in its 2024 Expedition. We score it at 9 out of 10 thanks to its comfy front, middle, and third-row seats, plus its gargantuan cargo area. Top-trim versions nudge closer to a 10 thanks to luxurious interior amenities.

The front seats are comfy enough for long road trips, especially if you opt for heated, cooled, and massaging seats—which become available as you work your way through this broad lineup.

Rear-seat passengers have 41 inches of legroom and a choice between a 40/20/40 bench or a pair of captains’ chairs. The second row slides forward for reasonable access to the third row, which is a bit narrow but can handle two adults or three teenagers.

The standard-length version offers 19.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row, which grows to nearly 64 cubic feet with it folded before topping out at 105 cubic feet with rows two and three folded down. The Expedition Max has 34/80/122 cubic feet, which is plenty—though both configurations trail the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban.

2024 Ford Expedition Safety

The 2024 Ford Expedition has a good crash-test record.

How safe is the Ford Expedition?

It’s off to a good start, even though the IIHS has yet to crash one. We give it points for its five-star rating from the NHTSA, its standard automatic emergency braking, and for its optional BlueCruise system that allows for lengthy stints of hands-off driving on many highways.

Every Expedition also has blind-spot monitors and active lane control, though adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and parking sensors are on the options list.

High-zoot models can be further equipped with BlueCruise. The system is more than worthwhile if you’re a road warrior. Note that BlueCruise is free for 90 days on so-equipped models. Unlocking three years’ worth of coverage is a rather pricey $2,100, so consider its value carefully.

2024 Ford Expedition Features

The Ford Expedition lineup boasts many configurations, none of which are inexpensive.

Ford offers its biggest SUV in six trim levels, each of which can be further upgraded with at least a few options. We score the lineup at 8 out of 10 thanks to a big 12.0-inch touchscreen in base trim, plentiful options, and great standard features including crash-avoidance tech.

The base XL STX costs $57,420 to start, plus another $3,000 for four-wheel drive. It’s equipped with cloth trim, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 12.0-inch touchscreen, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility. The long-wheelbase Max runs $2,000 more.

Those prices almost seem like a deal against the costlier Tahoe, but Ford forces buyers to step up to the XLT trim for north of $60,000 for a third row.

Ford includes a basic 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, too.

Which Ford Expedition should I buy?

The XLT serves as a good base, and to it we’d add the High option package that includes synthetic leather trim, a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, a power tailgate, and a wireless charging pad. Toss in trailer-towing gear and you’re looking at around $69,000 for a four-wheel-drive model.

The Limited’s 20-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, and big sunroof nudge the price up another $6,000 or so. It’s the gateway to the Stealth package with its power boost, though at nearly $81,000 to start, that’s one pricey big SUV.

How much is a fully loaded Ford Expedition?

The lineup crests $82,000 by the time you reach the rather fancy Expedition Platinum. It’s outfitted like a luxury SUV with its Bang & Olufsen audio, massaging front seats, and 15.5-inch touchscreen. Grab a long-wheelbase Expedition Platinum Max with four-wheel drive, BlueCruise, rear-seat entertainment, and a few other bits, and Ford will want about $97,000.

2024 Ford Expedition Fuel Economy

Want to get to know your local gas station? The Ford Expedition can help.

Is the Ford Expedition good on gas?

It’s pretty bad, though truthfully there are some rivals that guzzle even more. Rear-drive versions of the Ford Expedition are estimated at 17 mpg city, 23 highway, 19 combined, while 4x4 models check in at just 16/22/18 mpg. Those figures score just 1 out of 10 points. The long-wheelbase Expedition Max is generally a bit thirstier, while the high-riding Timberline is estimated at just 17 mpg combined.

Unlike the bigger V-8 in the Chevrolet Tahoe, however, the Expedition can run on regular unleaded.
