[Characters] React To [Media] General Thread (2024)

Ahoy there! I decided to start this thread in order to give a home to every mini-fic of fictional characters reacting to forms of media, ala The Imperial Family Reacts To If The Emperor Had A Text-To-Speech Device from a while back. This thread will be for every such project that a potential author might feel doesn't need its own thread, or doesn't yet feel that, and can just safely put here. It can also be for recommending and linking reaction fics elsewhere, but that's a secondary thing. Here on the first post, I will attempt to document, list and organize every single such reaction fic.

A couple rules, mostly set down by the mods when I asked if I could do this:

As mentioned by Terrafun, be careful when doing this to books in particular, as that stretches fair use fairly thin. It's much more acceptable when you have to make the cross from a different medium in order to make a story, but still, transcribing entire episodes of a TV show verbatim would also be on the far side of "too much".

From me, my only rule would be credit the thing you're writing a reaction to, link it if possible.

I will attempt to organize fics into three lists, one for Characters reacting to Media about them and two for Characters reacting to Media not about them, the difference being how I organize said lists.

Well, there's Robert reacts ASOIAF open sandbox

I have two half made reaction fanfics on my phone. One is where the cast of Watching Him Die Again and Again watches Adventure Time because the flat world of Re:Zero is being plopped down into Adventure Time Earth so watching episodes of the series will help them get better prepared for the wackyness of the verse.

The next one is Corrin from Fire emblem Fates finding a particular book in his library, one that has the title 'Tsukihime.' Basically Corrin playing through Tsukihime and how the story will affect his decisions. Low key considering Corrin getting some boons for pressing on with reading the book, like letting him have access to powers and abilities described in the book.

So far, I have only had him react up until Shiki wakes up in the hospital so it's not a lot.

I want to make a react fic for the thread so badly, but I haven't watched the show nor read the books. My only exposure to lore has been fanfic so I am not exactly qualified to write something good there.

Most of the writers aren't any more qualified than that either, and is usually set within the first few episodes.

The order in which I organize everything. The first list will be by character, and the second list will be by media, catering to however you want to peruse the list. This is assuming the list will ever grow to be so unwieldy as to necessitate that but if I wait until then to implement such a thing, it'll be hard as hell to put into practice.

Yeah that's good one shame it hasn't updated in a while. Also if anyone's looking for reaction fics archive of our own has a tag for reaction fics though most of them is for some light novels there still reaction fics for other things. My personal favourite reaction fic on Ao3 is currently is What happened here?an Arcane reaction fic

Freelancers is the Freelancers watching RvB from the start and the other one is the Bloodgulch gang starting with Washington.

Nasuverse has characters from Stay Night and Zero watching UBW Abridged.

Painless lessons is reacting to their own series and so is Spy x Family iirc

Y'know, I thought I had more of these since I'm a sucker for a good 'characters watching their own series' fic, but I guess most of the ones I was thinking of are either dead or I didn't actually subscribe for updates? I don't know, here's some good ones.

The Future Briefing Island by Shire_Folk (MHA watches MHA, with a B-plot of the characters starting to act on the information)

In the Grasp of Schadenfreude by ThoughtSpinner (background/side-characters (Inko, Endeavor, Bakugo's parents, etc.) watch MHA, courtesy of an emotion-eater man-shaped eldritch abomination using their emotional reactions as a meal)(inspired by/counterpart to The Future Briefing Island, implied to be taking place about the same time)

"For The Want Of A Nail" things can change by HeadcaseKiller (MHA reads/watches (it's unclear which) and reacts to several "for want of a nail"-style fanfics, all by the same author)

Owl House & Hexside Watches the Owl House by Cornholio4 (Owl House watches Owl House)(It's... okay. It's technically competent, but it's also one of those ones where the author themselves is a character making meta-references the characters don't understand and, IIRC, having several instances of other authors showing up as guest characters)(is also basically the only Owl House fic of this nature that's not dead)

Past and Future by ScarletRequiem (Mob Psycho 100 cast watches Mob Psycho 100)

There's this Dragon Ball react fic that's pretty good in my opinion, it was dropped by the writer but they did get through a bunch of the movies first.
