One of my favorite things about the summer months is the abundance of fresh berries. They are the best healthy snack! But because of where we live, we enjoy frozen berries most of the year. We stock up on organic frozen berries every time we’re at Costco. Recently, we have been using a bag of frozen mixed berries to make a delicious triple berry sauce.

This homemade berry sauce comes together in under 10 minutes, making it the perfect addition to a weekday breakfast. We love to eat it with sourdough pancakes or waffles, dutch baby, raw milk yogurt or homemade vanilla ice cream. It tastes like such a treat but is made with such easy ingredients and sweetened only with a little maple syrup or honey.

here’s what you’ll need:

This simple berry sauce is a super easy recipe. It is made from just 4 simple ingredients:

  • Frozen berries – blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or any combination of them. (Fresh berries could also be used.)
  • Maple syrup or honey – the berries on their own can be a little tart, so I like to add just a dash of natural sweetener. But you could totally go without!
  • Arrowroot powder – Used to thicken the sauce, arrowroot powder is a healthier alternative to cornstarch.
  • Water – Filtered water is best, we love and highly recommend a Berkey.

how to make homemade berry sauce

Heat the frozen berries in a small saucepan, covered, over medium-low heat. The berries will break down as they melt, but you can mash them too, if you prefer. This will only take a couple minutes.

When the berries are totally melted and have released their juice, turn the heat off and add the maple syrup or honey.

Whisk the arrowroot powder in a half cup of water and add to the berries. Stir until the sauce thickens, which just takes a few seconds. It should coat the back of a spoon. Serve immediately while the sauce is still warm.

If you like a smooth sauce, blending with an immersion blender is a great way to achieve a smoother consistency.

Store this sauce sealed in a glass jar in the fridge for up to a week. After the sauce is refrigerated, it will be much thicker than when it was fresh. Just add a little water to return the sauce to the desired consistency.
